I think the thing that has inspired me most in life would be my life experiences and the mistakes I have made that I have learned from. As a teenager I was involved with drugs at a young age. My family was full of addicts in one way or another, whether it be meth, marijuana, alcohol, or sex. 3 hours after I had turned 18 years old, I got arrested for possession of methamphetamine which led to a felony conviction. 3 years later I added to that by getting a DUI. After that I never got in trouble with the law again, but I continued my drug use for another 5 years. I remember not having any drugs to use for about a week and in that time I remember how good it felt to be clean. I vowed from then on to stay clean, but not just become a recovering addict. I wanted more for my life than the simple fact of overcoming drug addiction. I felt empowered at this point in my life to do something than just survive.
I remember praying to God to give me wisdom in any mistake I made right after my felony conviction. I believe he has answered those prayers for me. I have gained so much self awareness over the years. My thirst for knowledge was never the same since the day I prayed for wisdom. I love how the human mind works and the capabilities of it. We always hear the cliche “You can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it.” I believe this statement more than ever. I truly believe wholeheartedly if you put your mind to something and you are willing to put in the work, anything is possible in your life. When I came to this realization it has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me. I went on to lose about 70 pounds by forming new habits and routines. I got my CDL and I now work for a company making decent wages.
I want to get my bachelors degree in Substance Abuse Counseling. I feel like that is where I am called to be. I would make less money than I do now, but that is not what life is about. I want the opportunity to make a difference in peoples lives, and help give others the second chance at a new life that I got.
